Cards combination description

Low arcan Two of Cups and high arcan Hierophant and low arcan Three of Cups combination - marriage and wedding celebrations (also strengthened with Lovers, Ten of Cups).
Two of Cups tarot card

Card 1 - Two of Cups

This card shows an image of a man and a woman that are exchanging their cups in a ceremony. There is the symbol of Hermes caduceus in between which is often related to negotiation, trade, cosmic energy, protection, proper conduct, and duality. The Two of Cups refers to something quite positive, for it is one of the most auspicious cards in the tarot for relationships, whether romantic, business or otherwise. It suggests a new partnership is in the works, and it will be created with balance, respect, and honor. Above the caduceus is a chimera, which symbolizes fire and passion also governs this partnership.

Associations:

Similar or supporting cards:
The Lovers (love relationship) all supporting marriage cards, Temperance (harmonious bond)

Opposing or contradictory cards:
Three of Swords (quarrels and upheaval) Five of Cups (let down or betrayal).

Two of Cups combinations
For many readers, this is the card of engagement or marriage, although I prefer the Ten of Cups (but this is personal preference, as many see the Ten as happy home life, covered in later section). With the number two I see it as ‘continuation of,’ a progression, but in combination with other marriage cards would form part of that progression and association.

Hierophant tarot card

Card 2 - Hierophant

The card depicts a religious figure that sits in a rather formal environment characteristic for a church. He is wearing three elaborate vestments which are designated to represent the three different worlds. His right hand is properly raised in an act of benediction, a sign of blessing – it s the same hand that the Magician has raised. In his other hand, he carries a triple cross, which is associated traditionally with the pope. Each of the horizontal bars in the cross are thought to represent the Father, the Son and the Holy Ghost. Beneath him, two acolytes are seated, representing the transfer of sacred knowledge within institutions. Through these acolytes, the card also comes to represent following the path to knowledge and education. This card is also known as the High Priest in certain decks - as well as the Pope. He is acting as the masculine counterpart of another card which is known as the High Priestess. This card is ruled by Taurus.

Associations:

Similar or supporting cards:
The wisdom of The Hermit, sometimes the structure of The Emperor. Marriage and family cards would strengthen that association.

Opposing or contradictory cards:
nbsp; The Fool (free spirit and adventurous) The Hanging Man (thinking outside the box, unconventional) The Devil (excess, not following moral codes).

Hierophant combinations
When appearing together with other marriage cards it would strengthen the association, such as: Ten of Cups, The Lovers, Two of Cups, Four of Wands, Three of Cups, The Empress. The Ten of Pentacles, Ace of Pentacles (sometimes Justice), may also be included as supportive for what they represent, (but not in isolation). There are quite a lot of different combinations that can indicate marriage but the ordering or flow of the cards is usually the important factor, when reading in a simple line from left to right.

Three of Cups tarot card

Card 3 - Three of Cups

When you draw the Three of Cups, you will see three women lifting their cups up in the air in a celebration of some sort. Good times are in the air, for the three ladies have wreaths made of flowers in their hair. Wreaths are often associated with success and victory, so their happiness is well deserved. The ladies are also seen standing on top of a field of flowers and fruit, further adding to the joyful feelings in this card. There are feelings of beauty, growth, compassion and happiness that the women share between each other. An interesting note though, in the Rider-Waite the woman in the middle is turned away from the reader and her face hidden from view. However, the two other maidens are seen smiling.

Associations:

Similar or supporting cards:
The Sun (happiness) Wheel of Fortune (good fortune)

Opposing or contradictory cards:
Five of Cups (sadness, let down) Five of Wands (everyone at odds) Four of Cups (apathy) Nine of Swords (worry)

Three of Cups combinations
Mainly, look for the Three of Cups following other cards to see the reason for what is being celebrated, such as: job, money, house, award, etc. Particularly found surrounded and with other cards representing weddings – in the run-up to my daughter’s wedding all of those cards regularly appeared in her readings together, so they tend to leave little doubt when marriage is on the cards!
